School Holiday Programs at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s popular School Holiday Programs are back! Keep your wildlife warriors busy during the September school holidays with their animal-packed, educational and fun kids programs.
WILD ADVENTURERS JUNIOR (5 – 8 YEARS OLD)
HALF DAY 9am – 12pm

- Monday 23rd September: Radiant Reptiles and Amazing Amphibians. Let the Nature Ed Team show your Wild Adventurer how intriguing our slithering and hopping species are! Come face-to-face with scaly reptiles and slimy amphibians that call Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary home. Learn interesting facts about them and discover why they’re important to our environment. Participants will journey through the Sanctuary on this Wild Adventure and be able to apply their newly learnt skills during a creative craft session at the end.
- Tuesday 24th September: Birds are Beautiful. Most fly, some walk and run…But all of the feathered friends here at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary have something in common: they’re unique and wildly majestic! Get up close to the cheeky, colourful and mighty birds here at the Sanctuary, learn interesting facts about them and what you can do at home to encourage a feathered friend to visit. Learn about habitats for birds and the role of native plants – participants will get the opportunity to get their hands dirty and pot their own native plant to take home, to hopefully attract more feathered friends!
- Wednesday 25th September: Magic Mammals. Australia is known for its unique native mammals, such as the Koala or Kangaroo. But did you know there are two different types of mammals? Learn about the difference between monotreme and placental mammals while coming face-to-face with some of Australia’s most iconic mammals such as Koalas, Kangaroos, Dingoes or Bilbies. Hear fascinating facts about nocturnal mammals and meet some of the lesser known species such as Ghost Bats. This experience will get your little wild adventurer in the know about native animals!
- Thursday 26th September: Thinking of Threatened Animals. Become a wildlife hero and learn what you can do to help threatened species! Sadly, threatened species are part of the natural landscape. The good news? We can help animals that need it most with only a few small changes in our daily lives! This program is for all little adventurers that want to find out more about endangered species in Australia and what they can do to help. Participants will meet some well known threatened species such as the Koala, as well as lesser known threatened species, learn about the importance of conservation and come away a wildlife hero!
- Friday 27th September: The Exotics: Animals from Afar. Want to learn more about the exotic animals here at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary? While we love our native animals, we are also proud to provide a habitat to our wildlife cousins from other corners of the globe! In this wild adventure, participants will get up close to exotic animals from afar such as Capybaras, Binturongs and Red Pandas, and learn fascinating facts about them. We will uncover some of the differences between native Australian and exotic animals during an interactive game, have time to get crafty and learn that conservation is more than just an Australian issue…it’s a global one!

- Monday 23rd September: Zoo Scientist for a Day. Become a Zoo Scientist for a day and tap into the fascinating world of wildlife science to help protect the future of our wildlife and environment! In this interactive program, participants will learn about ecology and natural sciences to encourage scientific thinking. Participants will observe water bugs and other mysterious minibeasts under a microscope or magnifying glass while learning about their importance in our ecosystems. The young scientists will also visit Honeyworld to learn about bees and the vital role that they play in our environment, plus create their very own Native Bee Motel that they can take home.
- Tuesday 24th September: Animal Trainer for the Day. Experience what it’s like to be an animal trainer and meet the stars of our shows! In this practical adventure, participants will step into the shoes of an animal trainer and learn techniques used to both check an animal’s health, and train behaviours for performance. Young adventurers will get the chance to see a range of training techniques across different types of animals and the best thing is – many of the techniques can be used at home on household pets!
- Wednesday 25th September: Homes for Wildlife. Spanning 27 hectares of sub-tropical rainforest and eucalypt forest, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the place for nature loving kids to learn about habitats for wildlife! Learn about the amazing work our horticulture team does to not only maintain the environment, but help all our native and exotic animals feel at home at the Sanctuary. Get an insight into plant species, learn about the importance of native flowers and gain an up close look at habitat design for different species. The young horticulturists will pot their own native plant, make seed balls and create a frog hotel that they can take home.
- Thursday 26th September: Keeper for a Day. Take a walk in the boots of a wildlife keeper and experience what it means to work with wildlife! This hands-on program is for all young animal lovers that want to meet some of our amazing residents and see what it’s like in the life of a wildlife keeper. Help keepers care for our animals and learn about food preparation, health checks and cleaning. Learn about different types of enrichment and assist in making them, which not only ensures an animal’s day stays interesting but also improves their health!
- Friday 27th September: Vet for a Day. Ever wondered what it’s like to be a vet? This exciting program gives young science fans and wildlife lovers an insight into what it means to work at one of the world’s busiest wildlife hospitals; Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. Learn about animal rehabilitation and rescue, discover release techniques, and get introduced to veterinary equipment and their uses to conduct important health checks. Participants will also explore the Sanctuary and learn interesting facts about our amazing animals.
